VENTANAS EN LA NOCHE

Nada hay que me guste más en el mundo que observar una ventana mientras paseo por la noche. Iluminada y tamizada por ese filtro ineficaz de las cortinas; asaltando impunemente -con mi intromisión- la intimidad de los moradores de las casas. Porque, al que sabe mirarlas con los ojos debidos y apropiados, discretos y moderados, las ventanas en la noche, le dicen muchas cosas.

No se equivoquen Uds. y piensen que le hablo de ventanas indiscretas; de ventanas fisgonas e impertinentes. De la búsqueda insana y morbosa del cotilleo o -de ninguna de las maneras- de situaciónes carnales comprometidas para con sus dueños. No se equivoquen Uds. Me gustan las ventanas iluminadas, por la noche sí, mientras paseo. Pero si están desprovistas de personas, mejor que mejor, aunque tampoco, necesariamente.

Me gusta mirar ventanas, abiertas a la mirada, por la noche. Ventanas que se traslucen, se clarean y adivinan; porque son un paso franco a la fantasía y a la presunción. A la imaginación y al ensueño. Hablo de ventanas que son portales y accesos a mundos particulares, que impensada y distraídamente, dejan escapar algunos atisbos de la forma de vida, de usos y de costumbres de los que viven al otro lado del cristal doble que aísla, no del frío, sino del exterior. Que es peor y es distinto.

A mi encantan esas ventanas del Soho Neoyorkino que se abren -imprudente y desenfadadamente- hacia afuera. Decía Edward Rutherfurd, que nada había más injusto y descorazonador que esa fina y delgada distancia que proporciona un cristal. Ese que -por fuera perlado por las gotas heladas de la lluvia- separaba empañado, el cálido y acogedor ambiente del apartamento del Upper West Side, del frio desolador y desesperanzado del que se acurrucaba en un banco junto al Strawberry Fields en un Central Park insoportablemente gélido y otoñal. Dos mundos separados por 6 milímetros de transparencia blindada.

 Mas o menos. Creo. No sé si decía eso, o fue eso, lo que yo entendí.

Difieren en mucho esas ventanas del Soho, de Brooklyn o las del Greenwich Village, con las ventanas que se manejan en esta mi ciudad de Málaga. Ventanas de Manhattan versus Ventanas de La Caleta. Porque allí, en los Niuyores, las ventanas abiertas a las miradas, son escaparates suavizados por visillos y mostrados al exterior sin ningún temor. Cómo si esos escaparates -tal si fuesen de Saks, Lord and Taylor o Macy’s, complementaran la casa hacia el exterior. La calle, a su vez, hacia dentro de la propia casa.

Allí, se abren las cortinas despreocupadamente enseñando orgullosamente sus lámparas encendidas; sus sillones de lectura. No sé porque (bueno, sí lo sé), pero hay muchos rincones de lecturas que están en esas especies de cierros acristalados que están junto a esas escaleras de diez o doce escalones que dan entrada a las casas de vecinos. Desprendiendo un olor -sí, estoy diciendo un olor- de calidez y acogimiento, de hogar y recogimiento que se vuelven envidiables para el ojo entrometido que está, asomado desde afuera, esperando una imposible invitación para entrar.

Sin embargo, en Málaga, en España, no hay ese sentimiento exhibicionista del hogar. Decía un amigo que en España, los ricos viven escondidos. No sólo los ricos, todos vivimos escondidos, de espaldas a los demás; temerosos de que alguien nos pueda arrebatar -aunque sea con la mirada- la inmensa inutilidad de objetos acumulados durante toda una vida y que tenemos ocultos en nuestras casas; solo a disposición nuestra y de algunos pocos amigos. Cosas y casas. Así son las cosas; así son las casas.

Y no duden, de que si por estos lares, -en el mejor de los casos, de las cosas y de las casas- los salones, los rincones de lectura, los mismos habitantes, salen a la calle -a través de sus ventanas, metafóricamente hablando- amparados por esa luz de tono caliente que poseen, lo hacen entre barrotes de hierro forjado y cortinas vigilantes que ejercen de frontera; de límite y aduana.

A mí, cuando me doy esos paseos con mi amigo el andariego, me gusta mirar hacia arriba -y digo hacia arriba, porque nadie abre las cortinas de su miedo más abajo del tercero- para ver -a través de las ventanas en la noche- como esas lámparas iluminan paredes, cuadros y bibliotecas, para imaginar el cómodo sillón (una biblioteca siempre estará huérfana sin un sillón de la marca «favorito») para robarle, a esos vecinos, un poco de su intimidad; colarme de improviso, natural y sencillamente, en sus casas; para así, ponerme a cubierto del frío viento de poniente -que con su hálito de humedad- nos anuncia este otoño, la lluvia que ha de llegar.

Los mejores recuerdos que la Gorgonzola Family tiene de sus vacaciones de Navidad en Nueva York, son sin duda, los repetidos paseos por Bryant Park con su pista de patinaje, su precioso entorno y -sobretodo- los típicos puestos navideños instalados por todo el parque. Un lugar donde era imposible abstraerse  a la tentación de comprar adornos para tu árbol de Navidad, y muchas cosas más.

Aunque haya que pagarse el tributo, todos los años, que no es sino la nostalgia inmensa que te entra al adornar el árbol de tu casa.
